Why lunch on the grass?«
The Domaine du Montcel is a place steeped in history and art. On 23 April 1983, in the middle of this very lawn, the artist Daniel Spoerri (a famous member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement) orchestrated a legendary performance entitled «Le Déjeuner sous l'herbe». In the presence of 120 personalities from the art world, including Arman, César and Pierre Soulages, a grand banquet was organised... before all the tables, crockery and leftovers were buried underground in a 60-metre trench!
In 2010, INRAP carried out the very first archaeological digs applied to contemporary art, uncovering the remains of this meal. If part of this work still lies beneath our feet, and bronze casts perpetuate its memory, rest assured: this time, I promise, we'll stay on the grass!
