The must-see museum in Jouy-en-Josas

Just a few minutes from our hotel, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy invites you to discover the history of an exceptional textile heritage. These famous fabrics, produced in Jouy-en-Josas since 1760 by the Manufacture founded by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, have graced the elegant Court of Versailles and left their mark on the history of French design.

Created in 1977 to celebrate this heritage, the museum now displays fascinating collections of patterns and samples, testifying to the region's unique expertise. Mr Oberkampf was also the owner of the Domaine du Montcel, establishing a historic link with our hotel, where certain Toiles de Jouy still decorate the walls of our rooms.

THE MANUFACTURE

The Manufacture was founded in 1760 by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, following the lifting of an 80-year ban on the production and use of printed cloth in France. He distinguished himself by the quality and originality of his fabrics, which were used for clothing and furnishings.

Between 1760 and 1843, more than 30,000 designs were created, ranging from florals inspired by Indian productions to rural, literary or historical scenes. These creations were a huge success with the aristocracy and bourgeoisie, enabling the Manufacture to become the first in Europe and to obtain the title of Royal Manufacture in 1783, employing up to 1,300 people.

This success was driven by the international influence of toile de Jouy, which was exported throughout Europe and as far afield as the colonies, contributing to the worldwide renown of the French style.
